Grow it and Cook it

The project aims to transform an under used green space near our Community Hut into a thriving communal garden and aims to deliver 60 family sessions each year. Local residents are invited to join these activities and will also receive the opportunity to learn about gardening, cooking and food safety, as well as enjoy the food they have grown. In addition, after-school food sessions will run for local school children teaching them the benefits of growing local food ad its nutritional value. We run a series of after school and weekend 3 hour sessions for local families and young people at Bridge Community Hut, based around three areas of activity: gardening, cookery, and wellbeing. In total there will be 3 programmes of 20 sessions each per year.

  • Gardening sessions (family and children’s sessions) will include all aspects of planning, planting, maintaining and using the garden (eg sowing, watering, weeding, pruning, composting, soil care, harvesting, crop rotation).
  • Cookery sessions – specifically for the children and young people – will focus on simple recipes based on the crops grown in the Hut garden (eg vegetable soup, cheesy leek pies, raspberry sauce). The hut is situated immediately next to Tiverton Primary School and Stamford Hill Primary School (opposite street) and Tom Hood Secondary School nearby, so is ideally placed for after school sessions.
  • The ‘Grow your own wellbeing’ family sessions will use plants grown in the Hut garden to introduce simple pleasures to increase individual wellbeing (eg mint/chamomile tea, making and using scented herb oils, making a flower arrangement).
