For the second time since 2022, the Italian community was brought together to celebrate il Carnevale (the Carnival) - an annual event which ends on Shrove Tuesday with a colourful parades and masquerades taking place in Italy as well as in the UK.

This year, for the first time, the Carnival was hosted by Chestnuts Community Centre and took place on Sunday 26 February 2023, with over 150 people in attendance.

Italian families from Haringey as well as neighbouring boroughs of Enfield and Hackney, came together to dance, sing and have fun as part of the Carnival’s tradition of celebrating joy, unity and happiness. The Italian tradition of distinctive costumes and masks was sustained with both adults and children presenting their creative and artistic skills.

Amongst the attractions prepared for the day, children had an opportunity to take part in a singing competition, play with a friendly dinosaur, check their flexibility and stamina with a children animator – Anna Rita Conta and have a photo taken by a professional photographer – Micaela Virdis. In addition, there were a number of quizzes and games, including adults and children competing for the best outfit and mask. As per tradition, confetti marked the end of the party full of activities and fun for everyone involved.

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the event, local businesses – La Gioconda Restaurant, Asseje Neapolitan Trip Catering and Emiliana’s Kitchen – which provided food, volunteers and all who attended the event and helped to make the day fantastic and joyful. We are already looking forward to the Carnival 2024, so come and join us next year!
